Drone Kills French Photojournalist in Ukraine

Antoni Lallican was the first journalist killed by a drone in Ukraine as Russian forces increasingly target media workers, with 111 killed since the invasion began, officials said.

  • On Friday morning at 9.20 local time, Antoni Lallican, French photojournalist, was killed by a Russian drone strike near Druzhkivka, about 15 kilometers from the line of contact.
  • Lallican had travelled to Ukraine in March 2022 to document the Donbas mining basin, with work published in Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération, Der Spiegel, Zeit and Die Welt, winning the 2024 Victor Hugo Prize for Committed Photography.
  • Kyiv Independent photographer Hryhoriy Ivanchenko was wounded and is in stable condition, and both journalists wore personal protective equipment and vests marked `PRESS` when struck.
  • The fourth Heavy Mechanized Brigade accused the enemy of cynically violating international humanitarian law and French President Emmanuel Macron extended condolences, saying Lallican was accompanying the Ukrainian army on the resistance front.
  • Monitors report 111 media workers have died since the invasion as of September 25, and Sergiy Tomilenko said Russian drones are the main threat to journalists.
