Walmart Extends Into Restaurant Delivery with Subway Deal
Customers can order Subway sandwiches with groceries through Walmart’s app as the retailer expands restaurant delivery to about 1,400 stores.
On Thursday, Walmart launched Subway delivery through its app, making Subway the first restaurant integrated into the retailer's Express Delivery service at select locations.
The companies piloted the partnership last month in Connecticut and the service is currently live across six states including Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Expansion to roughly 1,400 Walmart stores is planned by the end of July.
Customers receive Subway orders within 30 minutes at in-store pricing with no delivery fees. "We're seeing a lot of customers purchase their Subway meals in addition to their groceries," Walmart spokesperson Tracy Poulliot told reporters Thursday in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Subway North America president Damien Harmon said the delivery program represents growth opportunity for franchisees, who have operated inside Walmart stores for about 20 years and must now participate in the service.
Walmart also sees a path to expand restaurant delivery beyond its stores, considering integration with Sparky, its AI shopping assistant, to enable customers to place orders using simple AI prompts.
