EU's von der Leyen backs AI slowdown, to invite frontier labs for talks
She said the European Union will work with leading AI labs and partners on model evaluation, verification and security to reduce frontier risks.
- On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced she will invite major AI frontier labs to discuss "how we can support ongoing industry efforts to pace the frontier."
- Von der Leyen cited security concerns, warning that frontier models could enable "hacking on a scale that we never thought possible" while falling into the hands of adversaries.
- Noting that the AI Act became enforceable in August, she highlighted the Commission's supervisory powers over risk-mitigation measures following industry calls to slow self-recursive models.
- The Commission will partner with "like-minded partners such as Canada, the UK and others" on model evaluation, verification, early warning, and AI security collaborations.
- While OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk support a slowdown, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg argued on Tuesday that market competition incentivizes labs to build safely.
