Volta launches out of stealth, to lease capacity in Norway from Bitdeer for “leading AI lab”
The 16-year lease covers 121MW of IT capacity and could reach about $8 billion with a renewal option, according to company statements.
- On Tuesday, seven-month-old AI infrastructure startup Volta Infra announced it raised funds at a $2.4 billion valuation, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital with backing from Nvidia and Michael Dell.
- Founded this year by former Brookfield executives Ricard Boada and Sofia Gumuzio, Volta aims to solve the high cost of AI hardware by framing compute as a "new infrastructure asset class."
- Volta secured a $10 billion, six-year contract to supply cloud capacity to an unnamed AI developer, with Bloomberg reporting the partner is Anthropic; the first phase deploys at a Bitdeer Technologies campus in Norway.
- The startup also launched a $5 billion AI infrastructure program with asset manager Azora to finance AI "factories," while Dell Technologies will serve as the technology provider for these data centers.
- Critics describe these arrangements as "circular," where suppliers fund customers who buy their products, a structure that could magnify losses if AI demand falls short of current industry hype.
