Virgin Galactic Is Finally Revealing Its New Delta-Class Spaceship This Week
The next-generation ship will carry up to six passengers and is designed for as many as eight flights a month, Virgin Galactic said.
- On Wednesday, Virgin Galactic unveiled its first Delta-class spaceship, named Apeiron, before transporting the vehicle from Mesa, Arizona, to Spaceport America in New Mexico for flight testing.
- This new vehicle replaces Virgin's retired VSS Unity spaceplane, which completed seven commercial missions before its final flight on June 8, 2024, when the company suspended operations to develop next-generation fleet capabilities.
- Each Delta-class spaceship accommodates six passengers—two more than Unity's four—and is designed to complete eight flights monthly, more than 10 times the previous rate, serving nearly 700 ticket holders awaiting flights.
- Engineering teams will complete avionics software validation at Spaceport America before flight testing begins, while the Arizona Spaceship Factory shifts focus to completing a second Delta-class vehicle for structural testing and engine assembly.
- Virgin expects the lead spaceship to enter commercial service in mid-2027, with the second vehicle following in late Q2 or early Q3 2027; further details on flight tests will be shared during the November earnings call.
