Vietnam arrests three on terrorism charges, including Norwegian and Australian citizens
Vietnam says the three men confessed to Viet Tan membership and planned sabotage, while rights groups call the case an abduction and transnational repression.
- Australian-Vietnamese democracy campaigner Tran Hiep, 50, went missing in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, after traveling to meet human rights defenders. Hiep disappeared alongside colleague Nguyen Duc Thuan on September 18.
- Scheduled to return to Bangkok on September 18, Hiep and Thuan failed to board their flight. The pair, members of pro-democracy party Viet Tan, have not been heard from since that morning.
- Vietnamese authorities reported detaining the men, alleging they "illegally entered Vietnam from the Cambodian border." Viet Tan denied these claims, accusing authorities of abducting the pair on fabricated charges to "cover up an act of transnational repression."
- Families of the missing men filed an appeal with the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. The Australian government confirmed consular officials are assisting Hiep's family.
- Viet Tan is calling on Australian and Norwegian authorities to press Vietnam for the men's immediate release. The group warns of increasing cooperation between Vietnam and neighboring governments targeting activists, citing more than 55 arrests during 2025.
