California Fire Captain Enlists Motorists to Lift Downed Chopper After Hearing Trapped Medic Groan

Sacramento Fire Captain led about 15 motorists to lift a downed helicopter and rescue a trapped paramedic within 30 seconds, saving lives after a critical crash.

  • On Monday evening an Airbus EC-130 T2 medical helicopter crashed upside down on eastbound Highway 50 near Howe Avenue, Sacramento, injuring three crew members: a pilot, a nurse and a paramedic.
  • Minutes after dropping off a patient, the helicopter experienced an in-air emergency and then crashed on the highway, with no patient on board.
  • About 15 drivers and more than a dozen bystanders rushed to lift the wreckage in about 30 seconds, enabling a firefighter to extract the trapped paramedic in less than a minute.
  • The incident left Highway 50 at a standstill and caused a major traffic jam, with no motorists injured, which Captain Justin Sylvia called `mind blowing`, while the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration opened probes.
  • TMZ released the 911 call in which dispatchers reported a victim trapped under the crashed chopper and a tow truck was needed.
