Victims’ group alleges Pope Leo XIV mishandled sexual abuse cases involving priests in Chicago and Peru
- On March 25, 2025, the advocacy group SNAP submitted a formal complaint to the Vatican, accusing Pope Leo XIV of failing to properly handle sexual abuse allegations in Chicago and Peru.
- The complaint alleges that in 2000, while serving as provincial supervisor in Chicago, Leo XIV permitted Father James Ray—who faced accusations of sexually abusing a minimum of 13 children—to reside at a friary near an elementary school without informing the school authorities.
- In Peru, three women filed a 2022 complaint against two priests to the Diocese of Chiclayo, then led by Leo XIV, but no formal investigation occurred before the case was closed due to the statute of limitations.
- SNAP spokeswoman Sarah Pearson said they have not received a Vatican response and called on the pope to apologize and place investigations outside the Vatican to gain survivors' trust.
- If Pope Leo XIV does not act on these demands, SNAP suggests he will lack necessary credibility, while his successor reopened the Peru case in December 2023 seeking a new investigation.

While it is good news that right wing fanatics in the Catholic Church didn't prevail in the election of the new Pope, I do want to point out that Robert Prevost, while head of the Augustinian order in the Midwest, and, later, worldwide, stonewalled...
'Open up those archives': Abuse survivors demand accountability from Pope Leo
Survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic priests are calling for Pope Leo XIV to institute a zero-tolerance policy and for the church to investigate his handling of prior sexual abuse allegations. “He needs to be transparent. He needs to be honest,” says Peter Isely, a survivor of sexual assault by a Catholic priest and a co-founder of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests. “Wait and see,” says James V. Grimaldi, executive editor of Nati…
Of the new things
My congratulations to those who have in Leo XIV a spiritual leader and my desire to be filled with them. For my part, as at the same time he is a cultured, sensible and spiritual man, I will read and hear what he has to say about the new things that haunt us. I am atheistic and anticlerical but not foolish. Every good idea is going to be little to preserve humanity and the dignity of the future. The rich is not only bribed; he has already been b…
