Verstappen back on top in Mexico City GP practice

On Friday, Max Verstappen set the fastest time in practice for the Mexico City Grand Prix with a best lap of one minute 17.392 seconds, challenging Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris as their McLaren rivals struggled.
Chasing a fifth successive title, Verstappen has roared back into contention after being 104 points adrift, winning three of the last four races and holding five Mexico City wins at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Practice times showed small gaps at the front but bigger trouble for the McLaren pair as Charles Leclerc was second, 0.153 seconds slower, Lando Norris fourth, 0.251 seconds off, and Oscar Piastri 12th, 0.840 seconds adrift.
Oscar Piastri still leads the standings but his margin is reduced, now ahead of Lando Norris by 14 points and Max Verstappen by 40 after being 34 and 104 points clear post-Zandvoort win.
In first practice, reserve drivers and substitutes drew attention as Arvid Lindblad stepped into Verstappen's Red Bull, posting sixth-fastest time and saying `I was given the pep-talk beforehand`, while George Russell watched wearing a traditional Mexican Luchador mask.
