Vernon author Chad Soon wins B.C. history award for profile on NHL pioneer Larry Kwong
The judges praised the article for its engaging storytelling and research, and Soon received $250 and a certificate.
- On Saturday, May 30, Vernon teacher Chad Soon received the BCHF's Philip Yandle Best Article Award at a gala in Vancouver, earning $250 for his profile on Larry Kwong.
- Soon's winning piece profiles Kwong, the first Chinese-Canadian NHL player, who made history in 1948 by playing a shift for the New York Rangers before continuing his career across North America and Europe.
- Judges praised the article, appearing in the Fall 2025 issue of British Columbia History, as "highly engaging and accessible" and noted it "successfully recovers an important but underrepresented figure in Canadian sport history."
- Soon, who serves on the BCHF board, previously authored "The Longest Shot: How Larry Kwong Changed the Face of Hockey," which won the Chinese Canadian Historical Society's Edgar Wickberg Prize in 2025.
- The South Dakota Library Association selected "The Longest Shot" for a statewide student reading program, where Grade 4 and 5 students in the Mount Rushmore State voted it their favorite book.
