Verizon outages reported across U.S.
The outage affected over 1.5 million Verizon customers nationwide, disrupting calls and data with some 911 calls failing, while engineers worked to resolve the issue.
- On Jan. 14, Verizon Communications Inc., the nation's largest wireless carrier, confirmed a nationwide outage impacting wireless voice and data services beginning about noon ET, first acknowledged on social media at 1:07 p.m.
- Verizon said engineering teams remain fully deployed and focused on the interruptions, working to identify and solve the issue on Jan. 14, while it did not see an indication of a cyberattack.
- Downdetector recorded over 1.5 million reports, with user reports peaking just over 180,000 and up to 175,000 customers seeing "SOS" mainly in eastern U.S. cities including New York City and Chicago.
- After resolving the outage, Verizon advised affected customers to redeem a $20 t credit via the myVerizon app, with a text notification when available.
- Washington, D.C. warned that Verizon outage may affect 911 calls and urged using other carriers; Krispy Kreme responded with free doughnuts, saying `'Some days need a sweet backup plan you can rely on'`.
