Venezuelan lawmakers pave way for withdrawal from International Criminal Court

- On Dec 11, Venezuela's National Assembly unanimously voted to repeal the law ratifying the Rome Statute, paving the way to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, with Jorge Rodríguez saying the repeal takes immediate effect.
- The Rome Statute, which created the ICC, establishes member duties and counts 125 countries, including Venezuela, which joined the treaty in 2000.
- December 1, the ICC announced it would close its Caracas office, and Karim Khan said in 2020 there was a reasonable basis for Venezuela's investigation, renewed in 2023.
- President Nicolás Maduro is expected to sign the repeal, enabling Venezuela to formally notify the ICC of its withdrawal amidst the ongoing 2023 investigation and post-2024 election tensions.
