Vehicles torched in South Africa as protests over asylum ruling rage on
On Thursday, anti-migrant protests turned violent in Soweto, Johannesburg and Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, resulting in at least 24 vehicles burned and shops looted across both cities.
Government spokesperson William Baloyi attributed the violence to deliberate misinformation regarding a July Constitutional Court ruling that does not automatically grant legal status to asylum seekers.
Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane confirmed 10 vehicles were torched in Soweto and 14 in Durban, where police arrested three people and reported no injuries.
Authorities warned that those responsible for the destruction will be "pursued and will be captured," while police mobilized additional officers to prevent further violence.
Months of anti-immigrant marches have drawn international criticism in South Africa, with thousands of African foreign nationals fleeing despite evidence not supporting claims that migrants strain public services.
VIOLENT anti-immigrant protests have erupted in Soweto and Durban following a court ruling on asylum. Dozens of cars were set on fire and foreign-owned shops were looted. Authorities have announced an investigation.
