Vanguard index product becomes first ETF to top $1 trillion in assets
The fund drew $66 billion in the first five months of 2026 as investors favored its 0.03% fee, Reuters reported.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF became the first exchange-traded fund to exceed $1 trillion in assets, the investment firm confirmed on Wednesday.
Attracting $66 billion in new capital through the first five months of 2026, the fund's growth stems from strong investor demand for low-cost exposure, as VOO levies a management fee of only 0.03%.
VOO hit this milestone less than 18 months after overtaking State Street Investment Management's SPDR S&P 500 ETF , which holds $785 billion, while BlackRock's iShares Core S&P 500 ETF maintains $860 billion.
"This is a key milestone," said Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, adding that "investors continue to turn to low-cost broad market exposure to gain access to the S&P 500 using VOO."
Analysts caution that the S&P 500 index looks richly valued at a 27.4x price-to-earnings ratio, driven by technology companies comprising 35% of the index.
