Vandalur Zoo closed for two days after Avian Influenza confirmed in water birds

The closure will support sanitisation, biosecurity checks and repeated sampling after seven water birds died at the zoo, officials said.

  • Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur closed to visitors on Thursday and Friday following confirmation of H5N1 Avian Influenza in water birds by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.
  • Seven water birds died between October 3 and 7, prompting Forest Department officials to send samples to NIHSAD for testing and confirmation of the viral infection.
  • "There had been no further bird deaths or reports of sickness since October 9," Zoo director T Ritto Cyriac told the TNIE, indicating the situation remained stable for 12 days before confirmation arrived.
  • Management initiated strict biosecurity protocols and intensive sanitization in accordance with Union government guidelines, facilitating close health monitoring of the remaining bird population during the temporary closure.
  • Reopening depends on consecutive negative sampling results repeated every 15 days, according to the containment action plan, while officials continue monitoring birds for any further signs of illness.
