Vance reaches out to Iran security chief in bid to restart peace talks, WSJ reports
On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, at President Donald Trump's direction to restart peace negotiations.
Vance is assessing if Iran and the United States can find common ground to convince Trump to cancel a potential strike on Tehran planned after next week's midterm elections.
Rezaei, a former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander from 1981 to 1997, is a close ally of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and viewed as one of Tehran's most influential hard-liners.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that while Iran is open to diplomacy, the country requires "reliable, implementable, and irrevocable guarantees" from the United States to ensure peace.
The Pentagon has increased military assets in the Middle East while Iran weighs a Qatar-led nuclear offer proposing United Nations inspectors access to bombed sites.
