Iran Intercepts US MQ-1 Drone East of Strait of Hormuz
On Thursday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed its air defense system intercepted and shot down a U.S. drone east of the Strait of Hormuz, though no firm evidence has been provided to support the assertion.
Analysts suggest the aircraft is likely an MQM-170C Outlaw rather than the retired MQ-1 Predator model, as the IRGC footage lacks identifying markings, complicating verification efforts.
U.S. Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for U.S. Central Command , dismissed the claims, stating, "We're not going to waste our time," while noting forces remain "laser-focused on our assigned missions."
Separately, regional mediators led by Qatar are working to restart U.S.-Iran negotiations, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating Iran remains in "close and ongoing contact" with intermediaries on peace proposals.
As both nations prepare for potential major campaigns, intelligence experts note that stimulating air defenses remains critical for mission planning, while the U.S. explores diplomatic frameworks to prevent renewed conflict.
IRGC intercepted an U.S. MQM-170 drone in the Strait of Ormuz, reported by Tasnim. According to information, the drone mission was to identify Iranian air defence capabilities.
