Vance intensifies rapidly and could become a major Category 3 hurricane
The storm could become a major Category 3 hurricane before Friday ends, with swells already reaching Mexico's southern and southwestern coast, the NHC said.
- On Saturday, October 24, 2026, Typhoon Champi swept past Taiwan's northeastern coast, killing one person and injuring more than 500 as strong winds downed trees and severed power across the island.
- Earlier this week, Champi tied Super Typhoon Sinlaku as the strongest storm of 2026 before weakening. The storm's center hugged the Yilan coastline before making a rare loop offshore, triggering gusts of about 227 kph.
- Taiwan Power Co. reported more than 146,000 households lost electricity during the storm. Service had been restored to more than 122,000 homes, representing a recovery rate of nearly 84%.
- Taipower dispatched 15 work teams from five regional offices in central and southern Taiwan to support northern restoration efforts. Authorities halted 25 offshore construction projects and suspended 18 passenger ferry routes to prevent further disruption.
- Champi is forecast to continue weakening while moving north towards China and Japan this weekend and early next week. Experts warn that the ongoing El Niño phenomenon adds extra heat to the planet, increasing extreme weather likelihood.
