Utility company pays $314 million to Eaton Fire victims
The utility said nearly 12,000 claimants have sought compensation, with payments ranging from $15,000 to $15.1 million.
Southern California Edison has offered more than $750 million in compensation to Eaton Fire victims through its Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program, though the utility maintains it has not accepted fault for the January 7, 2025, disaster.
The Eaton Fire destroyed 9,418 structures across 14,021 acres in Pasadena and Altadena, prompting lawsuits from victims and government entities. SoCal Edison countered with a cross-complaint alleging local agencies failed to act reasonably to mitigate damages.
SoCal Edison has extended more than 2,100 offers totaling $743 million, with $314 million already paid to claimants. Payments range from $15,000 for minor damage to $15.1 million for multiple properties, typically arriving within 35 days of a complete claim.
Fire Justice attorney Doug Boxer questioned the program's fairness, suggesting it targets vulnerable residents seeking immediate shelter. Edison International CEO Pedro Pizarro countered, stating, "Behind every claim is a person, family or business working to recover and move forward."
Residents must submit applications to the Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program by November 30, though applicants must waive their right to sue. Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger expressed support for the compensation effort while urging accountability for the tragedy.
