US will exit dozens of international organizations as it further retreats from global cooperation
President Trump orders exit from 66 global bodies citing mismanagement and conflicts with US sovereignty, ending funding to key UN climate, gender equality, and health agencies.
- On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending U.S. support for 66 organizations, agencies and commissions after reviewing participation in international organizations including U.N.-affiliated bodies.
- The State Department argued many organizations were redundant, mismanaged and a threat to U.S. sovereignty, while U.S. officials said funds will target U.N. bodies competing with China like the ITU, IMO and ILO.
- Among the targets are 31 U.N. entities and 35 non-U.N. organizations, including the U.N. Population Fund, UNFCCC, and the United Nations University.
- Experts warned the withdrawal has forced United Nations staffing cuts and project closures by independent nongovernmental agencies after last year's USAID aid slashes, and it was not immediately clear how much assistance would be affected.
- This move continues prior suspensions of the World Health Organization, UNRWA, the UN Human Rights Council and UNESCO, as the State Department said additional reviews are ongoing amid geopolitical tensions involving Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and Greenland.
