Mexico to tighten cattle flows from south, rules out shutting border over screwworm
- On May 11, 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a suspension of incoming shipments of live cattle, equines, and bison from Mexico through border crossings in the south in response to the detection of New World Screwworm.
- The suspension comes after New World Screwworm cases were found on isolated farms located as far north as the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Veracruz, which lie approximately 700 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.
- The parasitic fly lays eggs in open wounds of warm-blooded animals, causing flesh-eating maggots that inflict serious and often fatal damage to livestock and wildlife.
- USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins characterized the parasite's spread as a troubling progression toward the north and announced that livestock imports from Mexico will be suspended on a monthly basis until the infestation is effectively controlled.
- Mexico announced tighter controls on cattle movement from the south but ruled out closing its southern border, expressing confidence in reaching an agreement to resume trade soon.
