US troops returning to Poland in ‘coming weeks,’ defense minister says
Polish officials said the U.S. will resume a rotational troop presence after a pause that drew criticism from lawmakers.
On Monday, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that the United States will resume rotational troop deployments to Poland in the coming weeks, reversing a Pentagon pause implemented earlier this year.
The Pentagon suspended rotational deployments earlier this year, including a stalled 4,000-troop plan in November that drew bipartisan criticism from lawmakers over repeated interruptions to military commitments.
Deputy U.S. Ambassador to Poland Stephanie Holmes confirmed the restart alongside a U.S. military diplomat, while approximately 10,000 American troops currently remain stationed in Poland.
Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the decision at an event in Bydgoszcz where he signed a cruise missile production deal, though the White House has not publicly commented on the resumption.
President Donald Trump previously pledged 5,000 troops to Poland, but foreign policy adviser Marcin Przydacz to Polish President Karol Nawrocki suggested these may replace existing forces rather than expand the current headcount.
