TSA Lets Travelers Keep Shoes On in Security at Major US Airports
UNITED STATES, JUL 10 – The TSA will allow all travelers to keep their shoes on during screening starting July 7, 2025, ending a nearly 20-year-old security practice introduced after a 2001 shoe bombing attempt.
- The Transportation Security Administration announced on Tuesday that travelers will no longer need to remove their shoes during airport security screenings nationwide.
- This policy began in 2006 after Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, attempted to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes on a 2001 flight from Paris to Miami.
- The update reflects improvements in TSA security technology and new screening techniques, including advanced footwear scanning and electronic pat-down alternatives, which help simplify the process while preserving safety standards.
- Secretary Kristi Noem noted that over the past two decades, advancements in security technology have been substantial, and she anticipates these improvements will lead to much shorter wait times.
- The new rule may alter TSA PreCheck's value since many screening perks now apply to all travelers, but PreCheck remains beneficial for bypassing additional steps like removing belts and laptops.
