U.S. Coast Guard Monitors Chinese Ships Off Alaska Coast
The Coast Guard said the operation protects U.S. sovereign rights as China’s Xue Long headed for the Arctic with a second research vessel.
- On Sunday, July 12, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Munro shadowed the Chinese research ship Xue Long as it transited north through the U.S. exclusive economic zone and over the extended North American continental shelf in the Bering Sea.
- Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District, noted the U.S. is 'actively responding to competitor activities' as China and Russia have stepped up their military and scientific surface-vessel presence in the Arctic in recent years.
- The Coast Guard executed Operation Frontier Sentinel to monitor the Xue Long, which had a 'declared destination' of the Arctic to rendezvous with a second Chinese vessel, the Xue Long 2, the Coast Guard said late Friday.
- Under international law, foreign vessels may transit the exclusive economic zone, but the Coast Guard crew remained 'vigilant to ensure their activities comply with established international law' while protecting American sovereign rights in the region.
