US to re-engage with Gavi vaccine alliance amid Ebola outbreak, Rubio says
The move follows pressure from senators and Gavi’s $50 million response for Bundibugyo cases in Congo and Uganda.
- On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the U.S. will re-engage with the global vaccine alliance Gavi amid the Ebola outbreak in several African countries.
- Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. alleged last year that Gavi ignored safety, prompting the Trump administration to pull the group's funding entirely.
- The U.S. had been withholding around $300 million in annual funding while Gavi moved toward newer vaccines without thimerosal, satisfying U.S. conditionality requirements.
- Gavi Chief Executive Sania Nishtar stated she was "very encouraged" by the decision, as the U.S. made $50 million available for the Bundibugyo response in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
- Health and Human Services and the State Department are engaging directly with Gavi to ensure "a constructive path forward" regarding transparency and accountability, Rubio said.
