US single-family home prices rise in July, FHFA says
On Tuesday, the Federal Housing Finance Agency reported US house prices rose 0.3% in July, adding strain to homeownership for young adults amid persistent affordability pressures.
Mortgage finance firm Freddie Mac reported rates averaged 7.03% last week, the highest since January 2025, as US-Iran war tensions drive energy prices higher and push Treasury yields upward.
Monthly house prices rose in seven of nine census regions in July; the Middle Atlantic jumped 1.5%, while the Mountain region fell 0.8% and East South Central eased 0.5%.
High home prices and elevated mortgage rates dominate affordability debates heading into November midterm elections that will determine control of Congress, despite weak demand increasing housing inventory.
Bargain hunters across America may find encouragement as 2026 has seen weak appreciation, with home price gains in 21 states hitting their lowest levels in at least five years.
