US Senate Adds Missouri to the List of Teams with a Claim to College Football's 1960 National Title

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the 1960 Missouri Tigers football team's claim to a national championship, with Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt introducing the measure honoring coach Dan Devine.
The Tigers officially finished the 1960 season 11-0 after the Big Eight Conference ordered Kansas to forfeit their regular-season finale due to use of an ineligible player, securing Missouri the Big Eight championship.
Minnesota, Mississippi, Washington, and Iowa also claimed the 1960 title that year; the Senate resolution reflects the chamber's 'sentiments' without carrying the force of law.
Missouri team spokesman Dave Matter said in an email on Friday the school is 'aware' of the resolution but offered no additional comment on the newly recognized championship claim.
The resolution adds an historical wrinkle to a sport decided by polls before the Bowl Championship Series or today's College Football Playoff existed. 'And Kansas still lost,' Schmitt added during his remarks.
