US Rep. LaMonica McIver indicted on federal charges from skirmish at New Jersey immigration center
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, JUN 11 – Rep. LaMonica McIver faces up to 17 years in prison for allegedly assaulting ICE officers while trying to stop Newark Mayor's arrest during a May 9 detention center protest.
- On May 19, 2025, federal authorities charged New Jersey Congresswoman LaMonica McIver with three counts related to assaulting, obstructing, and interfering with law enforcement officers outside Delaney Hall in Newark.
- The charges arise from a May 9 incident in which McIver allegedly obstructed federal officers who were arresting Newark Mayor Ras Baraka as he attempted to participate in an official congressional inspection of an immigrant detention center.
- Prosecutors allege that McIver made physical contact with two officers during the incident, including hitting one with her forearm and shoving another, while she denies any misconduct and asserts she was carrying out authorized oversight responsibilities amid the disorderly situation.
- Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba explained that two of the charges each carry a potential prison term of up to eight years, while the third charge has a maximum sentence of one year, adding up to a total possible sentence of 17 years.
- McIver pled not guilty, will appear at a June 11 federal hearing under strict pretrial conditions, and her lawyer describes the prosecution as political retaliation for her public service and oversight work.
