US nod to possible sale of support services for Apache helicopters, M777A2 howitzers
On Monday, the State Department authorized a potential $4.2 billion helicopter and equipment sale to South Korea, comprising MH-60R multi-mission naval helicopters and AH-64E Apache attack helicopter upgrades.
Bolstering security in the Indo-Pacific, the sale aims to provide South Korea with credible deterrence as North Korea escalates nuclear and missile threats, including submarine-launched ballistic missile development.
Seoul requested 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters valued at $3 billion, with a separate $1.2 billion Apache upgrade package including 40 AN/ARC-231A radios and eight AN/APG-78 Longbow fire control radars produced by Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman.
Boeing serves as the main contractor for the Apache program, while Sikorsky manufactures the Seahawk helicopters; the potential transaction remains subject to congressional review before proceeding to the Republic of Korea.
State Department approval represents the maximum quantities and value authorized for this potential deal, with the MH-60R providing the Navy anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and search-and-rescue capabilities.
