Soccer-DR Congo Will Not Change World Cup Preparations Despite US Warning
The team said its schedule is unchanged as U.S. officials warn the delegation could be denied entry unless it isolates for 21 days.
The Democratic Republic of Congo continues World Cup preparations despite a United States warning requiring a 21-day isolation period, a team official confirmed on Saturday.
Raising the risk of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola to "very high" in the DRC, the World Health Organization reported nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths following the outbreak.
Team officials canceled a planned three-day trip to Kinshasa, but the training program remains unchanged. "We have kept our training programme. No player in the squad has come from DR Congo," a team spokesperson said.
Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force, told ESPN the Congolese delegation must maintain a 21-day isolation bubble in Belgium or risk being denied entry into the United States.
Heading to their first World Cup in 52 years, the Congolese team will be based in Houston and face Portugal in their opening Group K fixture on June 17, followed by matches against Colombia and Uzbekistan.
