US charges man with helping smuggle microelectronics with military uses to Russia
- U.S. prosecutors have charged a Russian-German man, Arthur Petrov, with smuggling microelectronics technology to Russia for military use in Ukraine. Petrov and two Russian co-conspirators allegedly used shell companies to conceal the fraudulent procurement from U.S. distributors. The technology was destined for Electrocom, a supplier of electronic components to the Russian military.
- Petrov faces 11 criminal counts, including violating U.S. export control laws, smuggling, conspiring to commit wire fraud and money laundering. The criminal complaint states that the smuggled technology included components recovered from Russian military hardware found in the Ukrainian battlefields.
- The scheme ran from February 2022 to August 2023, resulting in the shipment of over $225,000 worth of components. Petrov's case was coordinated through the U.S. Department of Justice's Task Force KleptoCapture, established in response to the Ukraine invasion.
