A Texas prosecutor reveals new details in an ICE killing of a Houston father
Investigators say ICE officers were looking for two Guatemalan men in a white van when one officer fired a shot that killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
On Thursday, U.S. Attorney Aaron Reitz provided new details regarding the July 7 fatal shooting of 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by federal immigration agents in Houston.
ICE officers initially attempted to stop the van, believing it matched the description of vehicles driven by two Guatemalan men; the agency previously claimed Salgado Araujo weaponized his vehicle, though Reitz's latest account omits any collision.
Investigators searched the van on Wednesday, finding "several small bags of a white, crystal-like substance," which legal counsel later clarified was a salt mixture used to maintain hydration during manual labor.
An officer was "partially inside the van or immediately next to it" when the fatal shot occurred, Reitz said; hundreds of residents, including Houston Mayor John Whitmire, attended Thursday's funeral to grieve the longtime construction worker.
The incident sparked protests in Houston and renewed scrutiny of Department of Homeland Security law enforcement tactics, as Salgado Araujo's family continues demanding transparency regarding the shooting that occurred while driving to a construction job.
A federal prosecutor in Texas on Thursday shared new details about the moments before an immigration agent fatally shot a Mexican national who had lived in the United States for decades earlier this month.
