Urgent search after prisoner flees funeral
Police say the 47-year-old escaped during his brother’s funeral and is not believed to be violent, with Crime Stoppers urging tips.
On Saturday at about 1:30pm, Prisoner Orijol Rukaj allegedly escaped supervision while attending a funeral at Keilor East Cemetery. Victoria Police are currently searching for the 47-year-old.
Granted day release to mourn with loved ones, Rukaj, a 'medium security prisoner,' managed to 'leave the cemetery undetected' during the service, police allege.
Officers describe Rukaj as Caucasian, 170cm tall with short, shaved black hair and a solid build. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, black suit, and Asics runners.
Victoria Police stated that while 'Rukaj is not believed to be violent,' members of the public are urged to call Triple-Zero immediately if they see him.
Rukaj is known to frequent the Sunbury and St Albans areas. Anyone with information is urged to contact Sunshine Police Station on 9313 3333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
