Windows 11 26H2 Boosts App Launch Times, Reduces Memory Usage
Windows Latest found the update also cut RAM use by 2GB after reboot in one test, while Microsoft said efficiency was a major focus.
Microsoft released a new Windows 11 update last week featuring a Low-Latency Profile and optimizations that significantly reduce memory usage, making the operating system leaner for low-end systems, according to Windows Latest.
Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's head of Windows, announced earlier this year that memory efficiency was a priority, stating the team is working on "compressing memory and making sure we're more efficient on the platform."
Tests by Windows Latest loading multiple applications confirmed reduced RAM utilization, while some Reddit users reported memory usage dropped by 2 GB following a reboot after the update.
These improvements are notable given that new RAM is expensive, and Microsoft continues selling laptops equipped with only 8 GB of DDR5 memory, which the company generally advises against.
While these software optimizations will not make hardware cheaper in 2026, they may help users consume less RAM while the industry awaits component prices to return to some semblance of normality.
Windows 11 26H2 could release up to 2 GB of RAM memory, according to the first user reports. However, others say that they did not notice any difference.
Windows 11 will use less RAM in the future, and one of the main reasons is no longer just user demand for better performance, but also the increasing price
Windows 11 26H2 should feel faster thanks to several optimizations. PCGH has therefore compared the start times of Explorer, Calculator, Editor and Paint under 25H2 and 26H2.
