Glasgow Union Street Fire Site Could Be Back in Use This Year as Architect Appointed
O’Donnell Brown will design a phased temporary use for the fire site, with space for displaced businesses and events, council officials said.
Glasgow City Council has appointed architects O'DonnellBrown to develop a design concept for a "meanwhile use" at the Union Street fire site, aiming to activate the crucial city centre space while a permanent solution is determined.
A fire on March 8 destroyed the historic B-listed building, disrupting access to Glasgow Central Station and leaving a gap site that council officials are unwilling to leave empty.
Planners are exploring "commercial and cultural uses" for the space, potentially drawing inspiration from "Boxpark style" developments, with activation planned over three to four months.
Council leader Susan Aitken emphasized the need for speed, stating that "getting life back into this vital part of the city centre" is essential to support the Central Station quarter's recovery.
O'DonnellBrown will produce potential designs within three to four months, though officials acknowledge that ownership complexities mean the final redevelopment will inevitably take considerable time.
