Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) A tropical depression near Hainan that was once Typhoon Saudel has found new life, intensifying into a tropical storm early Tuesday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
Typhoon Saudel made landfall in Zhejiang, China, and moved southward. Although it had weakened to a remnant vortex, it intensified again in the waters east of Hainan Island before turning northward, bringing strong winds and torrential rain to the southern coast. Meteorological experts exclaimed that this was unprecedented.
Typhoon Saudel weakened after making landfall in Zhejiang, China on August 28, but re-intensified into a tropical depression due to moisture replenishment from a large low-pressure zone. It became a typhoon again at 8:00 AM on September 1. There have been past cases of typhoons weakening into tropical depressions and then reactivating, even striking Taiwan again.
