UnitedHealth Group Profits Eclipse $4 Billion As Insurer Keeps Costs In Line
The insurer said value-based care and artificial intelligence are helping offset elevated medical costs as adjusted earnings topped Wall Street estimates.
On Tuesday, UnitedHealth Group reported third-quarter profit of $4.11 billion, beating Wall Street estimates and raising its fiscal 2026 adjusted earnings outlook to at least $20.50 per share.
The Minnesota-based healthcare giant is executing a turnaround plan focused on stabilizing margins by shrinking membership and ramping up investments in value-based care and artificial intelligence tools.
Exceeding analyst expectations, UnitedHealth earned an adjusted $4.69 per share on $112.69 billion in revenue, while the medical cost ratio improved to 88.4% for the quarter.
CFO Wayne DeVeydt stated that AI-powered ambient listening tools and a 27% year-over-year increase in patient-led scheduling are steering members toward lower-cost, high-quality care environments.
Despite these improvements, DeVeydt noted medical costs 'continue to be elevated versus historical norms,' partly due to the independent dispute resolution process under the No Surprises Act adding 100 basis points.
UnitedHealth released financial results for the third quarter that came above the analysts' expectations and again raised its projections for the year, as the health sector giant continues its restructuring.
