Union start fast, extinguish Fire to clinch best-of-3 series

  • On Saturday, Tai Baribo scored two early goals as the Philadelphia Union beat the Chicago Fire 3-0 to sweep the best-of-three first-round series.
  • Injuries forced the Fire to change goalkeepers as Chris Brady was ruled out in training, prompting Jeffrey Gal to start; the team also shifted from a back three to a back four and lost Romingue Kouame early.
  • Baribo opened the scoring by dispossessing Jeffrey Gal and scoring, then headed in a corner from Kai Wagner; Bruno Damiani added a first-touch volley after a failed clearance, while Andre Blake saved Brian Gutierrez's penalty.
  • The victory marked only the club's second road playoff win, and with the international break the Philadelphia Union are off until Nov. 22 or 23 and won't leave Subaru Park for the rest of the postseason.
  • Baribo became just the second Union player with a multi-goal playoff game, joining Jack Elliott in 2022, as Philadelphia has now won four straight against Chicago Fire.
