UN says attacks by RSF paramilitaries in Darfur killed 89 civilians in 10 days
The Rapid Support Forces' attacks included 16 summary executions mainly targeting the African Zaghawa tribe, worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis, UN officials reported.
- On August 20, the UN human rights office said Rapid Support Forces attacks killed at least 89 civilians in El Fasher, North Darfur provincial capital, and Abu Shouk displacement camp over ten days.
- The conflict traces back to April 2023 when tensions erupted into fighting, with the RSF originating from Janjaweed militias and imposing a total blockade on El Fasher last month.
- Human-Rights officials noted ethnic targeting as 16 civilians, mostly from the African Zaghawa tribe, were summarily executed; at least 57 died on August 11 and 32 between Aug. 16-20, plus one from the African Berti tribe in el-Fasher.
- UN officials demanded an immediate halt to the attacks, noting the actual civilian death toll likely exceeds 89, while the International Criminal Court investigates alleged war crimes.
- Beyond the killings, the conflict has produced a vast humanitarian crisis, with more than 40,000 deaths, over 14 million displaced, Zamzam camp once holding over 500,000, and WHO reporting 48,768 cholera cases and 1,094 deaths up to August 11.
