UN peacekeeper dies of wounds suffered in Lebanon
- On Friday, The United Nations Interim Force announced that Corporal Rico Pramudia died in hospital from wounds sustained during a projectile explosion at his base in Adchit on March 29.
- Pramudia's death brings to six the number of peacekeepers killed since the conflict escalated on March 2, including two French soldiers killed in an April 18 ambush that the UN blamed on Hezbollah.
- While a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been extended by three weeks, The Israeli military recently punished two soldiers with 30 days detention for vandalizing a crucifix in the Christian village of Debl.
- Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix said the UN is consulting with all parties about a smaller presence after UNIFIL's mandate ends later this year, with formal recommendations due to the Security Council by June.
- UNIFIL comprises nearly 8,200 troops from 47 countries who monitor the ceasefire and support the Lebanese army, though the mission remains caught in the crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.
