UN Resolution Urges Accountability for Attacks on Peacekeepers
The measure urges host states to investigate attacks and asks the secretary-general to report back within 120 days as violence and prosecutions lag.
On Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2823, co-authored by Pakistan and Denmark and co-sponsored by 152 nations to strengthen accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.
Rising violence prompted the action, as nearly 1,100 peacekeepers have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1948 and attacks have increased in sophistication with little accountability.
The resolution tasks Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to designate a senior focal point within 120 days and establish annual reporting on investigations and prosecutions related to peacekeeper attacks.
Ambassador Christina Lassen stated the resolution sends a clear message that "attacks against them will not be met with silence," while Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad added the Council must move beyond condolences.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric welcomed the resolution but stressed "much more needs to be done," noting that 103 individuals have been convicted since 2020 despite host states bearing primary responsibility.
Resolution co-sponsored by more than 150 countries wants to improve investigations and trials. More than 4,500 "blue caps" have died in service since the start of UN missions.
