UK's jobs market shows signs of stabilisation, REC/KPMG say
Permanent placements in Britain rose to 50.0, ending a 45-month decline, as starting salaries and temporary vacancies also increased, the survey found.
- On Monday, a survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG showed Britain's permanent job placements reached 50.0 in July, ending a 45-month downturn as Prime Minister Andy Burnham took office.
- Callum Licence, head of advisory at KPMG UK and Switzerland, said businesses are watching for policy signals: "With a new government in place, businesses will be looking for signs that the new policies can translate into greater confidence to invest and hire."
- Temporary vacancies rose for the first time in two years, while wage growth for temporary roles hit a 26-month high; the survey's temporary staff placements gauge came in at 51.9 in July, down from 52.7 in June.
- Bank of England officials are monitoring pay pressures from the Iran energy shock, though pay growth remains muted for now; policymakers anticipate second-round inflationary effects may emerge later this year.
- Medical care, engineering, and IT businesses recorded increased job postings, while vacancies in retail and hospitality contracted at the sharpest rate; recruitment patterns diverged sharply by sector during the month.
