UK's Doncaster Sheffield Airport set for public ownership ahead of reopening
The deal would put the airport and nearby employment land into public ownership, with freight services planned for Autumn 2027 and passengers in Spring 2028.
On Tuesday, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard announced an agreement to bring Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the Innovation Quarter into public ownership, subject to formal approval from the SYMCA Board and Peel.
After months of negotiations, government devolution flexibility allowed Peel Land to reconsider an option that previously "was not commercially acceptable" to them in 2022.
The deal positions local authorities as owners of both DSA and Fly Doncaster Ltd, supported by £160m in conditional funding allocated by SYMCA in September 2025 for the South Yorkshire Airport City project.
Doncaster Chamber Chief Executive Dan Fell MBE congratulated the partners, while Reform leader Howard Rimmer said the party is "never included in anything" regarding chamber communications.
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Board members will vote on October 27, with plans targeting freight service returns by Autumn 2027 and passenger flights by Spring 2028.
