Second suspect in Nord Stream case arrested in Croatia, say German prosecutors

German prosecutors say the suspect helped plant explosives on the Nord Stream pipelines and will be extradited to face sabotage and war-crimes charges.

  • On Wednesday, Ukrainian national Vladimir was arrested in Pula, Croatia, by police acting on a European arrest warrant linked to the Nord Stream pipeline explosions.
  • Prosecutors said Vladimir is a trained scuba diver who was part of a group that planted explosives on Nord Stream 1 and 2 near the Danish island of Bornholm in Sept 2022.
  • Police previously detained Serhii in Italian territory, with prosecutors charging him as an "accomplice to war crimes." Both men allegedly used a yacht chartered from the German port of Rostock.
  • The undersea explosions ruptured Nord Stream, Russia's main gas supply route to Germany, while Nord Stream 2 never entered service because Germany suspended its certification process.
  • Russia has accused Washington of staging the explosions, a charge Washington has denied, as prosecutors say the plot aimed to disrupt gas deliveries and prevent Russia from financing military operations.
