Ukraine starts testing interceptor drones that can bring down Russia’s new jet-powered drones

Ukrainian developers say current interceptors can stop Shahed drones, but a jet-powered reusable model is needed for faster threats.

  • UAV developer Volodymyr Yatsenko stated on Friday that Ukraine's current interceptors counter Shaheds but fail against jet-powered aircraft like the Banderol, forcing a fundamental redesign.
  • Such propeller-driven platforms cannot bridge the gap in closing speed and available energy, Yatsenko noted, while the enemy deliberately incorporates unfavorable cost exchange tactics into its strategy.
  • Reusability is the solution for acceptable interception costs during mass deployment, Yatsenko stressed, requiring Responsibilities divided across guidance, warhead, control link, and airframe development.
  • PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS APPROVED AT THE NSDC LEVEL must address speed, altitude, and integration, Yatsenko stated, though Ukraine lacks a domestically produced jet engine of the required class.
  • Flight testing, tooling, and training must occur simultaneously rather than sequentially, Yatsenko warned, as a sequential approach would take two years Ukraine cannot afford without a unified framework.
