Ukrainian capital Kyiv under attack by Russian ballistic missiles, mayor says
On Thursday, August 20, 2026, Russian forces launched ballistic missiles at Kyiv, killing one woman and injuring four people while damaging residential buildings and a children's hospital across several districts.
Russian forces have repeatedly struck Ukrainian cities, residential neighborhoods, and civilian infrastructure with missiles and drones throughout the ongoing conflict.
A Reuters witness reported hearing more than a dozen explosions, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported strikes in Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Darnytskyi where debris shattered windows near a five-story residential building.
Klitschko wrote on Telegram that people were trapped under rubble as emergency crews moved through affected areas, while officials confirmed damage to a medical facility in Solomianskyi.
International humanitarian law prohibits attacks directed against civilians or civilian objects, with hospitals receiving special protection; intentionally directing such strikes constitutes a war crime under the Rome Statute.
At least two people were killed and six others injured in Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kiev early Thursday, local authorities said. A rocket attack on Kiev hit residential areas, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
