Ukraine's Zelenskyy to visit Berlin on Tuesday, Germany's Merz says
The visit comes as Germany remains a major backer of Ukraine and as Kyiv seeks more air defense missiles and funding for next year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin on Nov. 3 for talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, confirmed at the Berlin Chamber amid a renewed push for peace negotiations with Moscow.
Kyiv seeks additional European funding of €70 billion for next year alongside urgent requests for missiles to defend against Russian ballistic strikes. Germany has supplied US-made Patriot systems but faces limited spare capacity.
Security concerns kept the visit under wraps until confirmation, occurring days before trilateral peace negotiations between Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington scheduled for Nov. 10-11 in Abu Dhabi.
Merz expects to meet Zelenskyy around midday while The Berlin Security Conference also begins today, though officials have not publicly detailed the specific agenda for their bilateral discussion.
Washington recently confirmed new talks with Russia about ending the conflict, coinciding with international efforts to stabilize the region as Ukraine continues pressing European allies for sustained military and financial backing.
A week before the three-way talks between Kyiv, Moscow and Washington began, the Ukrainian president travelled to Berlin. Selenskyi wants to talk to Chancellor Merz about Germany's role in the peace talks.
