Ukraine strikes Russian power and heat station in Moscow region

Drones hit Shatura plant, igniting three transformers and disrupting heat and power for Moscow region's 22 million residents, governor said.

  • On Sunday, Ukrainian drones struck the Shatura Power Station about 120 km east of the Kremlin, Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said, adding backup power was switched on and mobile heating systems deployed.
  • The Lenin State District Power Plant in Shatura is one of Russia's oldest facilities, founded under Vladimir Lenin, now running mainly on natural gas with an installed capacity of 1500 MW.
  • Vorobyov said `Some of the drones were destroyed by air-defence forces. Several fell on the territory of the station. A fire broke out at the facility`, while Exilenova+ published video and photos of the blaze.
  • Zhukovsky airport suspended operations amid the incident, disrupting regional transport, while residents in Shatura, a town of about 33,000, reported a large fire and no heating; authorities had not confirmed the attack as of this morning.
  • Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday it had downed 75 Ukrainian drones, including several over the Moscow region, while Ukraine has not yet inflicted major damage on power stations serving Moscow's population of more than 22 million.
