Ukraine says underwater drones hit submarine, but Moscow denies damage
Ukraine's Security Service used 'Sub Sea Baby' drones to critically damage a $400 million Russian Kilo-class submarine carrying four Kalibr missile launchers in a strategic naval strike.
- On Dec. 15, Ukraine's Security Service said Sub Sea Baby underwater drones blew up the Russian submarine 636.3 "Varshavyanka" in Novorossiysk.
- Kyiv intensified use of domestically produced maritime drones to push Moscow's navy to mainland ports, including Novorossiysk, targeting a submarine carrying four Kalibr cruise missile launchers.
- In a joint operation, the 13th Main Directorate of Ukraine's Security Service and the Naval Forces of Ukraine conducted the strike, while Sea Baby surface drones forced the damaged boat to remain in Novorossiysk port and drove Russian vessels out of Sevastopol Bay.
- The submarine, estimated at 340 million, sustained critical damage and was effectively put out of action, the SBU said, with rebuilding costs up to $500 million due to international sanctions.
- Historically, another Varshavyanka-class boat, "Rostov-on-Don," was damaged in Sept. 2023, and the SBU says underwater strike drones mark an evolution in Ukraine's strategy to undermine Russia's missile strikes.
