Ukraine launches attacks in new Russian region as it faces setbacks on home soil
- In recent weeks, more than 20 villages in Russia's Belgorod region, governed by Vyacheslav Gladkov, have been attacked along a 150-kilometer stretch of the Ukrainian border, while Russia has been attempting incursions into Sumy, according to Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
- These cross-border attacks began nearly two weeks ago, as both Russia and Ukraine seek territorial gains across the 1,000-kilometer frontline.
- Ukrainian forces have reportedly gained a foothold in the village of Popovka inside Belgorod, leading to heavy fighting, and have launched numerous drone and artillery attacks on another border area.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a visit to Paris on Thursday, claimed that Russia is planning a multi-pronged offensive in the coming weeks to lock in territorial gains ahead of any further ceasefire negotiations, accusing Russia of dragging out talks to buy time and grab more land.
- Despite US-mediated negotiations, limited ceasefires are making little progress, with one Russian negotiator stating he does not expect an overall ceasefire agreement until at least the end of this year, and the situation for Ukrainians deteriorating in Zaporizhzhia, where the Kremlin holds about three-quarters of the territory and has amassed as many as 70,000 troops, according to Ukrainian military analyst Kostiantyn Mashovets.
